How to Take Badass Instagram Food Photos

As a food blogger, this is one of the things I get asked the most-“How do you make your food photos look so good?”

My answer is, get creative! Think outside the box and don’t keep taking shots from the same angle! Besides the obvious (great lighting, camera, etc.), take the time to edit your photos and find the best angle for your dish. Every time I’m taking a food photo, I’m thinking of it as a model, and I’m going to make it a star (lol). Tell a story with your photos and make the food really pop out of your photos. Here are a few tips for you to try out:

Tip 1:

Light Light Light! Stop taking those dark, grainy photos and try and shoot your photos during the day. Natural light is always the best, I try and take my photos near a window. If you’re shooting at night, make sure to have a portable light on you! This is the light I use:

With the light.

For this shot, I used my portable light. Look how much of a difference it makes.

Without the light! Such a huge difference.

Tip 2:

Find fun backgrounds, don’t just have your food on the table. Hold that burger up and get the restaurant bar as your background so that your followers get a sense of the ambiance or even go outside. Find a cool mural or a brick wall that you can put the food up against.

Tip 3:

Make sure everything looks CLEAN. Wipe any stains on your plate and no lipstick stains on your wine glasses. And make sure to remove any strays from your food as well.

Tip 4:

Tell a fun story with your photos, add some personal stories which make it more relatable to your following rather than a “mmmm this steak was great!”

Tip 5:

Find the best angles that best emphasizes the strengths of your food. Sometimes side-shots don’t work for your food and you may have to get that perfect shot from an overhead to really showcase it.

Yep, you do take badass photos! Overhead shots are a skill to learn for sure! I’m still working on finding the right focus points in my own shots. Hubs rules in that department. BTW I also like your silly selfie ones too! =)
